Ahhh...I'm stuck in class learning about Banking Law in Hong Kong...a perfect time for an update. My classmates are awesome...we are a small bunch (10 total) from law schools across the USA. I've also got a couple of fellow Santa Clara students here with me as well.
Yesterday, we visited the High Court and actually watched part of a rape trial taking place, which was badass. They had the victim in another room testifying via a television screen so that her testimony wouldn't be affected/contaminated by the presence/intimidation of the accused rapist (who was locked behind a box in the courtroom escorted by two guards. The court system is much more formal as far as customs because it is based on the British system. Judges wear wigs and gowns and the attorneys do so as well.
We also got to sit down and have tea with Chief Judge Ma of the HK High Court, which was pretty bad ass as well (I'll post pics soon).
Afterwards, we had High Tea at a really nice hotel with a harbor view...food was great and put me to sleep (all you can eat).
Planning on hitting Macau this weekend and the horse racing track (Happy Valley)...apparently the race horses here are a bit smaller...they race Mongolian horses instead of the thoroughbreds we race back home. Not like that really makes any difference because it's not like I know jack sh*t about which horse to choose...=D
Also planning on visiting mainland China and maybe even the Philipines depending on what people are down for...somewhere where our currency goes a long way would be good.
A friend (Jen Soong from EY) just got into town so I'm looking forward to kicking it with her and her friends tonight...going to try and drag some of my 'mates with me.
So tonight, our class is renting a classic junk (old pirate-looking ship) and cruising the Victoria harbor while hopefully getting drunk out of our minds...I'll be sure to get some pictures...
What I'm starting to think about is perhaps coming back to HK to work upon graduation...it is a huge financial and banking center and lots of US attorneys come back here to work...I can easily see why...it is a BEAUTIFUL city and a great place to live...alright time to pay attention in class since this is my interest area (Finance/Banking/Commercial Law).
More pics to come...
